im corona

Since 1933, im corona has been crafting precision lighters in Japan, with each generation of artisans passing down accumulated knowledge and exacting standards. Every component, down to the finest detail, undergoes rigorous quality control — a reflection of the sincere craftsmanship and technical mastery that has defined the brand for over ninety years.

From Root to Shell

The Briar Making Process

It takes decades of underground growth, months of careful curing, and generations of Italian craftsmanship to create these briar shells. Rooted in a 150-year-old pipe-making tradition, raw, heat-resistant root burls are transformed into uniquely beautiful, hand-finished pieces.

Decades of growth

Harvesting the Root

Briar is cut from the root burl of the White Heath tree. It takes decades maturing underground in rocky Mediterranean soil to develop the dense, tight grain required for the shell.

Boiling the Burl

Before it can ever be shaped, the raw wood is boiled to remove its natural saps and resins. This prevents the wood from cracking or splitting later in its life.

Months to Over a Year

Curing and Stabilizing

The boiled wood is carefully dried out. Each burl spends months, sometimes over a year, resting and stabilizing until it is perfectly cured and ready for carving.

Hand-Finishing in Italy

The stabilized wood is carved and hand-finished in Italy—one of the regions where briar is prized most highly. A darker finish is applied to bring out the naturally heat-resistant grain, ensuring no two pieces ever look quite the same.
